Institute of Human Virology

The Institute of Human Virology (IHV) is a world-class center of excellence focusing on chronic viral diseases, especially HIV/AIDS, and virally linked cancers. IHV combines basic science, epidemiology, multi-disciplinary research, and prevention with clinical programs so that new treatments are streamlined from discovery to patient.

Co-founded in 1996 by Dr. Robert Gallo, who is most widely known for his co-discovery of HIV as the cause of AIDS and development of the HIV blood test, more than 75 percent of the Institute's clinical and research effort is targeted at HIV infection, but also includes the Hepatitis C virus, herpes viruses, and cancer research. IHV serves nearly 6,000 patients in Baltimore and has cared for approximately 1 million patients in seven African and two Caribbean nations. It also is a vital resource for the global scientific community.

Your gift to the IHV will have an immediate impact on research, patient care, and prevention programs to combat chronic, and sometimes deadly, viral and immune diseases.
