The Other Bucket Fund A Project of School of Medicine Special Projects

The Other Bucket Fund at the University of Maryland School of Medicine provides vital support to young adult patients who are battling cancer and have an identified need for non-medical assistance that will alleviate their pain and suffering. Gifts to The Other Bucket Fund help patients like Steven, who is living with cancer for a second time. Steven's story:

"This is not a new path for me, just a more difficult one. I am battling cancer -- again. The first time, I was only 11 years old and an active, healthy child. Now, at age 28, I am a single dad of two little girls, and have been ill for a while. The plan was for chemotherapy followed by radiation. 'I can do this. I've done it before,' I thought. What I didn't know is how much harder it would be this time. I am exhausted -- not exhausted like I have been chasing the girls around all day tired, but so tired I can't even get up to chase them around. Much of their care is given by my mom, who works full time, unless she is home with one of us because we are sick, or the countless appointments I have to make. We don't get out too much -- not to the park or family birthday parties -- because I have to be careful not to pick up infections or because I am just too exhausted. My oldest girl is profoundly disabled and the light of my life. Most days I spend about 20 minutes with her. Her laughter is my best medicine. For now, I am working on recovering one day at a time, keeping my eyes on the day when I can just be Daddy again, playing with my little girls and taking care of our home."

The Other Bucket Fund provided transportation for Steven and toys for his daughters to play with while he was undergoing treatment. It also allowed him and other patients helped by The Other Bucket Fund to maintain their dignity while fighting cancer.

How can you help?

Your gift to The Other Bucket Fund will allow us to continue to help cancer patients overcome the non-medical issues that arise in everyday life and especially when faced with a medical situation. Through their daily trials, you can help these patients retain their dignity and you can make their fight a little easier.
