Honoring Dr. Patricia Langenberg's Legacy in Women's Health Research

Honoring Dr. Patricia Langenberg's Legacy A Project of School of Medicine Tributes - Honor and Memorial Gifts

The Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is dedicated to improving the health of the public by training medical students, graduate students, and health professionals, conducting research, and serving as a resource to the university, the state, and the broader community.

In 1993, Dr. Patricia Langenberg founded the Women's Health Research Group, which brought together investigators from across the campus who were interested in the health of women in all areas, not just those involved in reproductive issues. The network enabled researchers from a variety of disciplines to connect and tackle multidisciplinary research and support a postdoctoral scholar.

Dr. Langenberg led the way: obtaining seed grants, jump-starting the program, holding an annual symposium for more than 12 years, and securing two large grants to advance research in women's health, the HHS-funded Center of Excellence in Women's Health and the NIH Office of Research in Women's Health BIRCWH K-12 Award that provides opportunities for junior faculty to advance scholarly work in women's health.

After 25 years of dedicated service to the University of Maryland School of Medicine and its Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, Dr. Langenberg has decided to retire from her regular position and become an emeritus professor.

How can you help?

The Dr. Patricia Langenberg Fund for the University of Maryland's Organized Research Effort in Women's Health has been established by colleagues and friends to continue her pioneering work in women's health research. Gifts will be used to provide support for research, scholarships, teaching, seminars, and publications related to women's health issues.
